Social Media Hard Truths: Part 1

Social media seems to have so many unwritten rules if you want to be successful. From what time to post to the hashtags you should use, the rhetoric that dominates social media "tips" seems to be only analytical and not always accessible for the average social media user. This is especially true when you're trying to run your own business as well as run your businesses social media channels.

But, never fear, Gothic Disco is here! And I'm here to drop a few truth bombs when it comes to social media and some of those aforementioned unwritten rules. Here are you social media hard truths:

  1. There is actually no secret formula. Did you know that everyone has their own "algorithm" on social media? Obviously each social media site has it's own way to push content to its users, but the way users interact with content and also the type of account you use when interacting with content, creates your own special blend of content and information from the algorithm gods.

Also, it terms of content itself and how it performs for your account. Everyone is different which means social media works differently for everyone. What works for one person or one industry would fail in another. This simply means, don’t try to keep up with anyone else. Learn from others but don’t allow their successful content to dictate the content you make for your individual business and industry.

2. Consistency IS key. Everyone is going to tell you this, but I feel like I need to reiterate it. Can you be successful without a consistent social media presence? YES. Can you fully reap the benefits of social media without being consistent? NO. Social media is a virtually free service, the least you can do for yourself is show up consistently.

Also consistency will look different for everyone. Consistency does not mean showing up and posting on social media 7 days a week. Consistency can be "I'm going to commit to posting on my business account 3 days a week without fail" or "I'm going to show up on my stories at least once a day during the week". Everyone seems to have an all or nothing approach to social media. They think that not posting every day is hurting them, when in reality what's hurting your social media presence is putting so much pressure on yourself to perform that you ghost your account more than you post.

3. Showing your face will work better than not showing your face. Show your face if you can, if you can’t or don’t want to, aim to create really strong content. Not showing your face will still work, BUT you probably aren’t utilizing social media as well as you can without showing your face.

4. Hashtags mean nothing if your content sucks. You can throw as many hashtags on a post as you want, but if the content sucks, then it isn’t going to reach who you want it to. Did you know, creating content that is relevant to your audience, is sharable, and interesting will allow your content to reach your audience with or without hashtags? Because it will.

5. No one cares as much about your content as you do. This one is actually a good thing disguised as a hard truth: no one cares. If a post flops, no one cares. If a post goes viral, also no one cares. So focus on creating content to reach your dream audience and content that you ACTUALLY LIKE rather than shooting for specific metrics.

Did any of these hard truths surprise you?
